Psychologists propose that wanting to fit in and keep up with others is a powerful motivator when it comes to being physically active. This is particularly true when one child asks another to participate in an activity such as going for a bike ride, taking a dance class or playing Frisbee at the local park.
Never underestimate the importance of parental praise and involvement in supporting these types of activities. Researchers asked school age children what they thought were some of their biggest challenges to staying fit. Surprisingly, they found that having transportation to and from a variety of exercise related events was at the top of the list. Work with other parents to share the responsibility of bringing kids to healthy and enjoyable events. Having access to a fun activity and group of peers will help your child begin, and keep, exercising.
