A review of 17 research studies, in which participants with inflammatory joint pain consumed either fish oil, seal oil or primrose oil in various amounts, found that after three to four months of treatment patients reported their symptoms improved. Specifically, participants told researchers they felt less pain, less stiffness in the morning and didn’t have to take as many pain medications. These findings are supported by a separate study in which laboratory tests showed that individuals suffering from Rheumatoid Arthritis, who took Omega 3 fatty acids, had an improvement in their serum Rheumatoid Factor and C-reactive protein, both of which are chemical markers of this illness.
Scientists are still learning how these fatty acids work in the body. They know that a complex interaction occurs along a thin membrane that covers the nerves, and believe chemical elements of Omega 3 fatty acids may help reduce inflammation and improve overall nerve function.
Fish oil varies in quality and potency, so speak with your physician to find out if it’s a good option for you.
