What is TBI?
Traumatic brain injury occurs when the head is agitated or hit by an outside force. During the event, the brain, which is surrounded by fluid, is violently shaken. This causes it to impact different points inside of the skull multiple times. As the brain hits the skull, the tissues are bruised, begin to bleed and sustain damage.
There can be tissue damage to multiple areas of the brain during one accident. As the brain swells, it begins to press against the walls of the skull. Pressure inside the brain increases, which in turn cuts down on the blood’s ability to flow freely. As blood flow slows or is cut off completely, oxygen and nutrients don’t reach the brain tissues and important brain cells begin to die.
The force of the impact can also cause shearing along important communication pathways. As the brain is shaken or rotated, its shape is altered which places great strain at certain points inside the brain. This strain causes damage that may be microscopic in nature, but has a lasting impact on the brain’s ability to send signals and control function.
Common symptoms of TBI include depression, mood swings, fatigue, sleep disturbances, anxiety, and a decreased attention span. In more severe injury, memory loss and motor function are impaired. TBI affects all aspects of an individual’s life from personal relationships to one’s ability to hold a job. Research shows that head injury in children can affect developmental milestones.
