Dr. Greg Vigna: Brachial Plexus Lawyer
If your shoulder, arm or hand are not moving correctly after an accident, there may be damage to the brachial plexus. The brachial plexus nerves which exit the spinal cord from the cervical spine in the neck (C5-C8) to the first thoracic nerve (T-1) of the upper back. They divide several times as they run under the collar bone and end at the armpit. These nerves are responsible for shoulder, arm and hand movement, and if injured can result in life-long disability (sometimes referred to as Erb’s Palsy and Klumpke’s Palsy).
Dr. Greg Vigna is a brachial plexus injury lawyer with over 20 years medical experience managing these type of injuries. Nerve Injury and Disability
The types of symptoms experienced after a brachial plexus injury differ depending on where along the spinal cord (C5-T1) the damage happened.
Cervical Nerve 5 (C5): Injury results in a paralyzed shoulder. It is not possible to lift up (abduct) the arm. The outside (lateral) portion of the shoulder will be numb to touch.
Cervical Nerve 6 (C6): Damage at this level impairs extending the wrist and bending at the elbow. The lateral, outside, portion of the forearm will have lost sensation.
Cervical Nerve 7 (C7): Injury makes it difficult to extend the arm at the elbow, or pull the arm in toward the chest. The muscles of the forearm may also be weakened. The index finger and the arm will be numb to touch.
Cervical Nerve 8 and Thoracic Nerve 1 (C8 & T1): Hand movement and forearm flexion are impaired. A constricted pupil on one eye, together with a drooping eyelid and a decreased ability to sweat is also possible. The forearm, middle portion of the arm and two outer fingers will be numb to touch.
