Dr. Greg Vigna is a Board Certified Rehabilitation Physician, Certified Lifecare Planner and personal injury attorney. He is the only faulty device and bad drugs lawyer in the country with all of three of these qualifications.
As a doctor and parent, he understands how devastating secondary injury in a child, a loved one or yourself can be, especially when it comes from improper medical treatment, such as dangerous drugs or devices. Suffering is heightened in these cases because the underlying illness or injury often remains, new complications have developed, and trust in the companies and doctors offering a solution has been undermined. Many times patients feel violated, depressed and hopeless. They don’t know where to get help.
We turn to medicine in our time of need, and trust that the treatments we receive will not cause harm, and will cure what ails us. Unfortunately, sometimes in their rush to go to market, drug and device companies do not complete all the necessary research to ensure their products are safe, and won’t cause unexpected side effects or serious damage.
We often see this when a drug or device that has been used for one specific condition is relabeled to treat a broader market. Drugs that have been used for adults are marketed to children and adolescents without fully knowing how their developing bodies will react. Devices that were safe to treat one condition are tried in another part of the body with disastrous effects. Sometimes companies take advantage of the trust we have in the past history of the product, by cutting corners when marketing it for new use.
A drug or device company stands to gain millions of dollars when they repackage or develop a new product, and the incentive to push that product into the market sometimes outweighs good judgment. When lawsuits happen, a trail of communication is often unearthed which shows that warning signs about the unsafe drug or device were pushed aside. It demonstrates that in the risk versus gain gamble, profit can take priority over the patient.
Sadly, patients pay the price through pain, suffering, life-long complications and even early death. It is extremely important that drug and device companies are held accountable for the decision to go to market, especially when they ignore warning signs, or do not have adequate long term safety data. Patients need to be compensated for their pain and suffering and have their long term treatment and recovery needs paid for. It’s essential to send a message that valuing profit over patients is unacceptable.
Unbiased, Independent Medical-Legal Counseling
Defective device and drug injury lawyer Dr. Greg Vigna involves leading medical experts, who are not personally affiliated with pharmaceutical or biomedical companies, to evaluate your symptoms. He works closely with physician specialists in the field who are carefully screened to ensure they consistently uphold the highest medical standards, and that their research is never funded by the drug or device companies under scrutiny. This ensures that an unbiased and expert opinion can be obtained in your case.
The law offices of Greg Vigna MD JD are currently working with patients suffering from a variety of medication and implant complications including Risperdal, Testosterone Replacement Therapy, Xarelto and Transvaginal Mesh (TVM). We also evaluate new complaints related to unexpected complications and side-effects from FDA approved treatments. Our device and pharmaceutical injury lawyers can evaluate your case and provide free legal help for those who have been injured.
Risperdal
Risperdal is a medication that was successfully used in the adult population, and then approved for use in children and adolescents with autism, schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. The effect of the drug in this population was not adequately tested, and as a result caused some males to develop breasts, a condition known as gynecomastia.
For young men the psychological effects are devastating, directly impacting their ability to engage in age-appropriate activities and develop a healthy body image. Plastic surgeries and liposuction are often required to remove the breast tissue and restore the normal male physique. Psychotherapy to address body-shame issues and cope with bullying may be needed.
Testosterone Replacement Therapy
Testosterone replacement therapy has been aggressively marketed by pharmaceutical companies to alter normal, age related changes in testosterone levels. Many reductions in male testosterone level are a direct result of increased body fat, and can be easily remedied by diet and exercise. Testosterone replacement therapy has been shown to increase the risk of heart attack and stroke.
Xarelto
Xarelto is a blood thinner used to treat patients who suffer from atrial fibrillation and congestive heart failure. It is being marketed as a replacement to Coumadin (Warfarin) with one of the primary benefits being patients no longer needing monthly blood draws and dosing adjustments.
Unfortunately, once a dose of Xarelto has been taken there is no way to stop its effect until it wears off, which is about 24 hours later. This means if there is a major bleeding event, such as from trauma, bleeding into the intestines or the brain, there is no antidote to Xarelto to make the body stop bleeding. Patients are not being fully informed of this risk.
Benicar
Benicar is a medication used to treat high blood pressure, from the ACE inhibitor class of drugs. It can result in diarrhea and malabsorption of nutrients, which in some cases has resulted in malnutrition, infection and death.
Transvaginal Mesh (TVM)
Mesh has been used with few side effects in hernia operations for many years. It was approved by the FDA to treat pelvic organ prolapse in women; however, adequate human testing and safety data was not obtained for that population. Women implanted with TVM suffer from severe pain, incontinence, erosion and infection of the mesh, inability to have sex, difficulty sitting or walking and permanent damage to the pelvic nerves.
